The third feature film by Berlin-based Palestinian artist and filmmaker Jumana Manna, Foragers tells the story of the traditional practice of foraging for wild thyme (za'atar) and wild artichoke ('akkoub) in Palestine, particularly in the Galilee. In 1997, Ariel Sharon, then Israel's Minister of Agriculture, made this practice illegal for Palestinians, who now face hefty fines and, in some cases, imprisonment. Blending documentary, archival footage, and fictional scenes reminiscent of the Italian commedia all'italiana, Jumana Manna crafts a film that is at once ironic, poetic, and deeply political.
